EUROPE NOW

A 2025 Review of Food, People & Policies Toward Foreigners

Reading Time • 20 minutes

Kamusta! Europe has always been a patchwork of flavors, faces, and frontiers. As borders reopen fully after the pandemic years and the continent prepares for Expo 2025 and the 2026 European Tourism Pact, maraming Pinoy (at iba pang travelers) ang muling nag‑i‑isip kung aling bansa ang uunahin. This short ebook gives you an on‑the‑ground look—fresh as of June 2025—at ten diverse European countries.

  1. Food – What’s trending beyond the clichés & how much you’ll spend.
  2. People – Cultural vibes, social etiquette, and how locals feel about visitors.
  3. Policies Toward Foreigners – The latest visa rules, work permits, and integration moves that matter in 2025
  1. My goal: help you decide where to visit, study, work, or maybe migrate—armed with realistic, napapanahong info. Whether you're craving new cuisine, eyeing a career pivot, or dreaming of a fresh start abroad, this guide gives you honest insights on what life really feels like today in each country—beyond glossy brochures or outdated blogs. No fluff, just field-tested tips and policy updates that matter.

—it’s a snapshot of real life on the ground, shaped by firsthand experience, latest policy updates, and kwento from fellow Filipinos already living in Europe.

Each country included here is different—some are easier for remote workers, others more welcoming to students or blue-collar migrants. This e-book won’t tell you where to go—but it will help you ask better questions, avoid false promises, and land somewhere you’ll thrive.

Ako si Kuya Serko., a Manila‑born content strategist turned remote worker. Since 2018 I’ve lived in four EU states (Spain, Portugal, Germany, and Italy), always armed with my trusty backpack, a Filipino palate, and an eye for policy changes. I compile annual “Europe Now” briefs for OFWs, students, and digital nomads. Sources for this 2025 edition include EUROSTAT, national migration ministries, and dozens of neighborhood chats.

I wrote this ebook from the perspective of someone na galing din sa pangarap—at sa dahan-dahang pagsunod nito gamit ang diskarte, research, at konting swerte. This guide is my way of saying: if you're planning to explore Europe, do it with eyes open and plans flexible.

My 1st Country  that I visited

ITALY

Food 2025. Beyond pasta, Milan’s zero‑waste trattorias now highlight ancient grains like timilia; Rome’s €3 coffee cap survived the 2024 inflation wave. Street food in Palermo averages €4–6 per arancini meal.

People. Italians remain warm but time‑protective. English comprehension in the North is at 65% (ISTAT 2025) but dips to 32% in rural South—still, a smile + “Permesso?” breaks ice fast.

Policy Toward Foreigners. The Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) launched March 2024 is in full swing: proof of €28 000 annual income + health insurance gets you a 12‑month stay, extendable. Seasonal‑worker quotas were trimmed 10% for 2025 harvests, so agri jobs are tighter. Irregular migration fines doubled under Decree‑Law 20/2025.

 FRANCE

Food 2025. Paris leads the low‑carbon “bistronomie” wave—expect plant‑forward tasting menus from €45. Lyon still guards its bouchon classics; meanwhile, Bordeaux’s wine bars push alcohol‑free vintages after the 2024 public‑health tax.

People. Polite formality is back: “Bonjour, Madame/Monsieur” opens doors. Strikes remain part of life (rail walk‑outs averaged 1.2 days/month in 2024‑Q4), so keep flexible itineraries.

Policy Toward Foreigners. The Talent Passport now runs through an all‑digital platform (guichet‑unique.fr). As of Jan 2025, family‑reunification proof‑of‑housing rose to 24 m² per adult. France’s short‑stay Schengen ETIAS pre‑clearance (launch May 2025) costs €7 and is valid three years.

3 • SPAIN

Food 2025. Tapas is evolving: Madrid’s “neo‑tabernas” pair vegan croquetas with Vermut 2.0. Daily menú del día still averages €13 nationwide. Valencia’s paella rice terraces were UNESCO protected in 2024, so expect slight price hikes.

People. Late‑night energy endures—dinner at 9 p.m. is normal. English proficiency climbed to 60% among under‑35s (CIS survey 2025). Locals are chatty but expect you to try basic Spanish.

Policy Toward Foreigners. Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa (Law 28/2022) hit 50 000 approvals by April 2025; income bar sits at €2 646/month. The 2025 migration reform allows “arraigo por formación” pathways—study a vocational course and transition to work status. Golden visa for real‑estate investment ended July 2024; only business/inno routes remain.

Kaya Spain will always be more than just tapas and flamenco for me—it’s where I first saw myself in the mirror, grinning, in a land I never thought I’d reach.

GERMANY

Food 2025. Berlin’s Döner 3.0 eateries spotlight high‑welfare lamb; price ceiling €5.50 after the 2024 rent‑inflation accords. Bavarian breweries pilot alcohol‑reduced beers ahead of Euro 2026.

People. Direct, punctual, yet increasingly international (foreign‑born share 19.3%). Learning three German phrases earns big respect. Cash is fading fast—87% of 18‑35s pay by card or phone.

Policy Toward Foreigners. The Skilled Immigration Act 2.0 fully rolled out Jan 2024 and introduced the Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) points system; job‑seekers can stay 1 year to job‑hunt with proof of €12 000 funds. Minimum salary for Blue Card dipped to €39 682 in 2025 to woo tech talent. Integration courses remain subsidized but mandatory within first 12 months.

(Laugh)

  NETHERLANDS

Food 2025. Amsterdam’s plant‑based “stroopwafel 2.0” craze meets new sugar taxes—now €3.20 each. Dutch‑Indo rijsttafel experiences thrive, averaging €28 per diner.

People. Candid yet tolerant. In 2024, Dutch time‑use survey showed foreigners rate friendliness 7.9/10 (up from 7.4 in 2021). Small talk? Keep it concise.

Policy Toward Foreigners. Housing crunch drives stricter rules: proof of rental contract required before IND issues residence cards (pilot from Feb 2025). Highly‑Skilled Migrant salary threshold €5 567/month. As of May 2025, non‑EU partners of Dutch nationals receive a 30% tax ruling extension when working.

Work Possibilities for Pinoys.

SWEDEN

Food 2025. “Nordic Green” dominates—expect seaweed burgers in Stockholm at SEK 145. Alcohol laws still strict: Systembolaget closes 19:00 weekdays.

People. Lagom (just‑right balance) guides social life. Personal space valued. English almost universal (90% fluency).

Policy Toward Foreigners. Salary floor for work permits jumped to SEK 40 000/mo in Nov 2024; exceptions exist for shortage occupations. Sweden’s Talent Visa (2025 pilot) grants 9‑month stay for start‑up founders with ≥ SEK 300 000 funding.

Tinulungan pa rin ako, pero nagtanong siya, “Are you following me because I look like I know life?”

Yung first time kong bumili sa Systembolaget.

GREECE

Food 2025. Post‑pandemic price freeze keeps souvlaki at €3 in many kiosks. Islands push locavore seafood after the 2024 Sustainable Aegean initiative.

People. Philoxenia (love of strangers) remains palpable—expect offers of extra dessert. Economic rebound lifted morale; youth unemployment fell to 18% (down from 23% in 2022).

Policy Toward Foreigners. Golden Visa property threshold doubled to €500 000 in Athens, but remote‑worker visa (income ≥ €3 500/mo) stays popular. New 2025 law grants seasonal hospitality workers social‑security credits after 80 days.

 POLAND

Food 2025. Warsaw street‑food halls serve kimchi‑pierogi mash‑ups (~PLN 22). Coffee culture booming; specialty flat white now PLN 14.

People. Hospitable yet conservative. English proficiency 51% nationwide, 70% in major cities. Strong solidarity with Ukrainian refugees continues.

Policy Toward Foreigners. 2024 reforms trimmed short‑term work permits from 24 to 18 months but introduced fast‑track IT visa (approval in 15 days). Border registration for Ukrainians extended through Dec 2025. EU Blue Card salary threshold set at PLN 10 500/mo.

Personal Kwento.

PORTUGAL

Food 2025. Lisbon’s “petisco revolution” offers tapas‑sized portions of bacalhau for €4. Azores cheese exports drove new farm‑to‑table tours.

People. Laid‑back and friendly. English spoken widely in tourism hubs (80% in Algarve) but less inland. Expect everything to run “mais ou menos on time.”

Policy Toward Foreigners. Golden Visa real‑estate path closed Oct 2024; cultural/art investment routes remain (min €250 000). Digital Nomad Visa requires 4× Portuguese minimum wage (~€3 680) monthly income. SEF was replaced by AIMA (Agency for Integration) in 2024; backlog clearing continues into 2025—bring patience.

 UNITED KINGDOM

Food 2025. Post‑Brexit Britain leans fusion—Fil‑Brit adobo tacos topped Deliveroo’s 2025 Trend Report. Pub pints average £5.90 outside London (£6.80 central).

People. Polite queuing, mild sarcasm, and endless weather chat survive. Multicultural: 18% residents born abroad (ONS 2025). Tolerance remains high but cost‑of‑living grumbles dominate.

Policy Toward Foreigners. Points‑Based System tightens: Skilled‑Worker salary minimum rose to £38 700 in April 2025. EU visitors now need ETA pre‑clearance (£10, valid 2 years) before boarding. Graduate Route under review—stay tuned for Autumn 2025 statement. NHS surcharge remains £1 050/yr for adults.

THANKS / PASASALAMAT

Salamat sa pagbabasa! This ebook grew from countless coffees shared with expats, OFWs, and friendly locals who opened their homes and data sheets. Special thanks to:

  • My Patreon community for funding quick‑turn translations.
  • Government officers who clarified policy drafts (you know who you are!).
  • My ever‑patient family who reviewed Tagalog idioms at 2 a.m.

FINAL SAYING

Mabuhay & buen viaje!
